Hosted By : Jonah Guest : Jamie Meyer The most unlikely thing happened when I sat down to be interviewed by Jonah. We instantly became some semblance of friends. And because of that dynamic, this interview is different than my typical interview format. Evolving from an interview into a conversation where two People were getting to know one another. This interview became the catalyst for my evolving perspective on what a typical interview format should be and reminded me how much fun throwing out the rule book can be.
We started by discussing the weird and wonderful way we come up with names for things, the fledging offering of my company and how it had evolved until this conversation in late 2022. Naturally that segued into Jonah's dream of a travelling Podcast, his live in Twinados, that it is a fact that 6-year-olds are tidier at school than they are at home, that when trod on with bare feet Barbie sunglasses hurt far more than Lego pieces ever did and how you can expect to see a four-year-old's finger painting exhibition as the next feature at the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma. That conversation thread evolved into what it was like to travel during COVID, the drastically different experiences of People during that time, its affect on businesses, the impact on Societal behaviours and the necessary adaption of companies. At some point, I laugh myself hoarse but we still manage to touch on how fear perpetuates irrationality, how we fear things that we don't understand and what it feels like to begin getting to know yourself. And while I haven't yet made it to Tulsa for a follow up interview in person, over a year later Jonah and I still check in on one another like we have been friends for years. Jeffrey Besecker is a Holistic Behavioural Coach, whose skill lies in recognising the unconscious patterns that influence our behaviour, shape our choices and direct our relationships.
On his Podcast, The Light Inside, Jeffrey aims to explore the inner workings of cognitive systems, delivered through relatable content and stories giving the audience actionable insight into our unconscious behaviours. He hopes that through shedding light on these patterns and the way they present in our everyday lives, his listeners go on to lead richer and more informed lives, led by beneficial changes that improve the fabric of their reality and in turn shape a better society. While most of us would recognise that we fear the unknown or have hesitancy around new experiences, there wouldn't be many of us who would know it is a verifiable phobia. Neophobia is the psychological pattern of how we rationally or irrationally approach new stimuli or experiences. I personally would describe these neural processes as conditioned behaviour, fuelled by fear-driven reactions, rather than a phobia or phobic tendency. But that doesn’t detract from the existence or our use and application of these neural pathways. My perspective is garnered from my own life experiences and personally utilised heuristics of Neophobia I can see how I acquired those thought patterns, how I used them to inform my choices and life and what it takes to see them, overcome them and begin acting without them. Jeffrey and I discuss how these trained tendencies paralyse us and stifle our opportunities for growth. The way we accumulate the definition for our 'comfort zones', how we use that definition to inform our reality and how that reality is shaped based on stimuli we know how to navigate and have previous experience with. Which doesn't necessarily translate to being a healthy or safe environment. Both Jeffery and I know the importance of recognizing and engaging with these facets of fear and security. His work focuses on psychologically acquired causes and personal development. Mine shifts through the materialisation of these patterned thought processes and how we use them to simultaneously build and suffocate our available outcomes. We move on to first Clients and coffee shops. What being a designer of solutions means, how sometimes we all need permission to do the crazy thing we wouldn't generally dare to do and why a crisis should never be wasted. When Yassmina, from Trusted Magazine, approached me, what began as contributing to an Article, surprisingly turned into a featured Interview. Always grateful for the chance to broaden perspectives, I appreciate Trusted Magazine for sharing their platform with me. In this feature, I share my triple-A-rated journey: ambitious, audacious, and accidental—an example of how the unexpected can turn out to be a most spectacular thing - which is the foundation of Agility. Eugene O'Neill wisely noted, "A man's work deteriorates when he thinks he's found the best formula." There are an endless array of formats, approaches, structures and models that can achieve better results. But we so often get entrenched in the standards of how something should be done and in doing so cement the extent of results we can achieve. Great things happen in the face of necessity, Agility harnesses this divination daily and increases receptivity to advantageous ideas and possibilities. While Agility is an effective relief response, it is far more effective when built into the ecosystem of a Company. As the world shrinks and opportunities expand, investing in Agility strengthens businesses, unlocking unforeseen avenues. Success in anything is about whether a practice is appropriately applied to circumstances and desired outcomes. The purpose of embracing Agility is to move towards goals with the least amount of friction. For Agility to be successful it must become a way of doing business. Share your experience in the comments. Alicia Cramer's family owned a dairy farm. A dairy farmer's life is hardening and its general mantra is "Hard work." So despite always dreaming of working for herself, it is no surprise that Alicia's journey to success was both hard work and hard. An interesting contradiction, when working for herself was an ambition of admiration and freedom. And yet hindered by the adopted conditioning from the life of a young farm hand. By 22, Alicia had 2 businesses under her belt. Obsessed with succeeding she worked 10 hours a day, 7 days a week. Only to find those businesses slip away regardless of her investment. Alicia still held onto her desire to have her own business but had to face the reality that she was creating a chasm of difficulty between her and her success. At 25 she tried again, focusing on her passion for Emotional Freedom Techniques. Achieving some success, but like many, didn't have the expertise in building a successful business. Around the age of 28, Alicia had additional incentive to really commit to her success, which led her into Hypnotherapy Training. She is now the go-to Hypnotherapist and Mindset Expert for Entrepreneurs, an International Best Selling Author, Public Speaker and has been an Expert Panelist on a TV Show for 2 Seasons. Her expertise now focuses on Mindset Reconditioning to overcome blocks to success in business and life. Alicia and I discuss how much smaller the critical gaps in business have become but are under-utilised, new forms of possible business infrastructure, being trapped by what we have become accustomed to, breaking out of those restraints to consider what success alternatives could lead to, how recycling the old stagnates growth, how to not waste a crisis and make it your greatest opportunity and how all of this can then be applied to our own personal development or progress. If you aren't willing to face your challenges, you probably aren't willing to look at your opportunities. Julie has had quite a tumultuous journey through life. But as all great people do, she turned that turbulence into something worthwhile for herself and for others. Julie teaches women how to discover what they can do and then make something of those skills. Working outside of traditional formulas and their own expectation of self.
This is what made my conversation with Julie all that more interesting, focused on a more belief system foundation and how I apply that belief system to the way I work and build my company as an example to others looking to do the same. I thoroughly enjoyed Julie and the energy she bought to this interview. And contributing to an interview from a different perspective than usual. Julie has served on numerous non-profit boards and was named Woman of the Year by the Professional Women’s Network of the Monterey Peninsula in 2013. If you would like to learn more about Julie Foucht you can visit her website. Being afraid to learn our own value is our biggest obstacle. But if we don't start doing anything we will never learn how. If we are all just looking to be heard, what is stopping us from listening to ourselves? Jeff Mendelson believes in paying it forward. Sharing experiences and perspectives from People, with People. In the hopes that something we hear on his Podcast, may be that exact piece of gold we’ve been looking for. His One Big Tip Podcast is all about bringing those big ideas to a broader audience. My conversation with him moved into a more Personal Coaching and Development arena, rather than the usual Business framework perspective. Covering the ideas, that if we are waiting for the perfect moment, we risk not succeeding at all. That there is gold to be found in assessing our routines and habits, and the results. How our comfort zones only depict a portion of what we have the potential to achieve. And how life is all about perspective and choice. How we have the freedom to chase our dreams despite society telling us how we should be or what is expected of us. Letting go of our limitations to build the life and success we desire. “Sometimes, you need to be willing to burn down every idea of what you think success looks like, to give you the space to create the life your dreams.” Our conversation is on Jeff’s Website Or available on Spotify And on YouTube
